How to Enable Intel VT-x in Your Computer’s BIOS or UEFI Firmware

Modern CPUs include hardware virtualization features that help accelerate VirtualBox, VMware, Hyper-V, and other virtual machine applications. But Intel VT-x isn’t always enabled by default.
If it isn’t, you’ll see a message like “VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system,” “This host supports Intel VT-x, but Intel VT-x is disabled,” or “The processor on this computer is not compatible with Hyper-V.”

Intel VT-x May Come Disabled; AMD-V is Always Enabled

First, this is only necessary for Intel VT-x. The Intel VT-x hardware can be disabled via a BIOS or UEFI firmware setting, and it regularly comes disabled on new computers.
AMD-V is always enabled if you’re using an AMD processor that supports it, so there’s no BIOS or UEFI firmware setting you need to change. However, if you have another hypervisor (like Microsoft’s Hyper-V) using AMD-V, you may see a message saying it’s not available.

Try Uninstalling Hyper-V

This error message can also occur if you have Microsoft’s Hyper-V installed. When you haver Hyper-V installed, Microsoft’s hypervisor takes over and won’t let VirtualBox or VMware access the Intel VT-x hardware. You’ll see error messages about Intel VT-x being unavabilable, even though it’s enabled on your computer.
To solve this problem, head to the Windows Features window in the Control Panel and uninstall Hyper-V. Reboot your computer and try using VirtualBox or VMware again.
Yes, Hyper-V reserves the hardware features as long as it’s installed. You’ll have to uninstall it if you want to use VirtualBox or VMware along with your CPU’s hardware virtualization features. It doesn’t matter if Hyper-V is closed — it’s reserving the hardware in the background.

Access the BIOS or UEFI Firmware

You’ll now need to access your computer’s low-level setup screen. On PCs made prior to Windows 8, this is probably a BIOS. On PCs made after Windows 8 came out, this is probably UEFI firmware.
On a BIOS-based system, you’ll need to reboot your comptuer and press the appropriate key while it’s booting to access the BIOS setup screen. For example, this is often the “Delete” or “F2″ key. It may also be “Esc”, “F1″, or another key.
You may see a message like “Press [Key} to access setup” on your computer’s screen while it boots. Perform a web search for your computer’s model number and “access BIOS” or examine your computer’s manual if you can’t find the key that works.

On a UEFI-based computer, you can’t necessarily just press a key while the computer is booting. Instead, you’ll need to follow these instructions to access the UEFI firmware settings from Windows 8’s advanced startup options. Hold down the Shift key as you click the Restart option in Windows to reboot straight to that menu.
Either way, once you’re in, you can begin looking around for an Intel VT-x option.
Typically, you’ll find this option under the Processor submenu. That menu may be located somewhere under “Chipset,” “Northbridge,” “Advanced Chipset Control,” or “Advanced CPU Configuration.”
Look for an option named “Intel Virtualization Technology,” “Intel VT-x,” “Virtualization Extensions,” “Vanderpool,” or something similar. Enable the option and select “Save and Exit” or the equivalent feature to save your settings changes and reboot your computer.

Unfortunately, some laptop manufacturers and motherboard manufacturers may not offer an option that lets you enable Intel VT-x. The setting may be disabled by default with an option that lets you enable it.
If you don’t see the option in your BIOS, try performing a web search for the model number of your laptop (or your motherboard, if it’s a desktop PC) and “enable Intel VT-x”.
In some cases, manufacturers may later release a BIOS or UEFI firmware update that enables this option or provides you with an option to do so. Updating your BIOS or UEFI firmware might help — if you’re lucky.

How to Pair Devices Over Bluetooth

Image result for bluetoothImage result for bluetooth
Wireless devices with Bluetooth radios must be “paired” with each other before they can communicate. This involves making them discoverable and potentially entering a PIN.
The pairing process works with “Bluetooth profiles,” and each device has to be compatible. For example, you can only pair a mouse or keyboard with a device that’s been designed to work with that type of accessory.

Put an Accessory or Device Into Discovery Mode

]To save battery power, a device with Bluetooth isn’t constantly broadcasting that it’s available. Even if you have a Bluetooth-enabled accessory near a Bluetooth-enabled device, they won’t be able to see each other until you put them into discovery mode. The device will then be “discoverable” by other devices — for a few minutes.
First, put the accessory you want to use into discovery mode. The exact way you do this depends on the accessory. If you have a headset, you may need to hold a button down on the headset for several seconds until a light starts flashing. A keyboard or mouse may have a similar button you may need to press or hold down. A speaker may have a Bluetooth button on its remote that puts it into Bluetooth discovery mode. A light may flash to indicate that the device is in discovery mode. It’ll only stay discoverable for a few minutes.
Not sure how to put your accessory into discovery mode? Consult its manual, check the manufacturer’s website, or perform a web search for instructions.
bluetooth discovery button
If you’re using a smartphone, tablet, or computer, you can make it discoverable, too. On an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, just open the Bluetooth settings screen — your device will be discoverable as long as you have that screen open. On a Mac, just open the Bluetooth settings screen. On Windows, you’ll need to search the Control Panel for Bluetooth click “Change Bluetooth settings,” and enable the “Allow Bluetooth devices to find this PC” option.
Note that you don’t need to make a device discoverable if you’ll be connecting from it. You only need to make a device discoverable if you’re connecting to it. For example, let’s say you wanted to connect a headset to your Android phone — you’d just need to make the headset discoverable, and not the Android phone.
But, let’s say you wanted to connect an Android phone to your computer — you’d need to make the Android phone discoverable.

Now, go to the smartphone, tablet, computer, music player, or whatever other device you want to connect the Bluetooth accessory to. Look for the Bluetooth settings or devices screen. This screen will display a list of nearby Bluetooth devices that are in discovery mode as well as devices paired to the device.
Be sure the Bluetooth hardware on your device is actually enabled. You’ll often see a toggle in the Bluetooth settings area.
For example, here’s how to do this on popular operating systems:
  • iPhone and iPad: Open the Settings app and tap Bluetooth near the top. of the list
  • Android: Open the Settings screen and tap the Bluetooth option under Wireless & networks.
  • Windows: Open the Control Panel and click “Add a device” under Devices and Printers. You’ll see discoverable Bluetooth devices near you. You’ll need Bluetooth hardware in your computer to do this, but you can always add Bluetooth to your computer.
  • Mac OS X: Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences. Click the Bluetooth icon in the System Preferences window.
  • Chrome OS: Click the status area at the bottom-right corner of the screen. Click the Bluetooth status in the pop-up that appears.
  • Linux: This varies depending on your Linux distribution and desktop. On Ubuntu’s Unity desktop, click the gear menu at the top-right corner of your screen, select System Settings, and click the Bluetooth icon in the System Settings window.
  • Other Devices: Whether you’re using a music player or a video game console, you should generally just be able to enter the device’s settings screen and look for a “Bluetooth” option.

Pair the Device and Enter a PIN

Select the discoverable device in the list to connect. Depending on the device and its security settings, you may have to enter a PIN code to pair the device. If you need a PIN code, it should be displayed on the device’s screen. For example, if you’re pairing your phone with your computer, you’ll see a PIN on your phone’s screen and you’ll have to type it into your computer.
You may sometimes not have to type the PIN. Instead, you may simply see the PIN displayed on both devices. Just ensure each device shows the same PIN code before continuing.
In some cases, you may be asked to enter a PIN even if your device can’t display it. For example, you may be asked for a PIN when pairing with a Bluetooth headset or speaker. Entering the code “0000” will often work. If not, you may need to check the device’s documentation (or perform a web search) to find the PIN it needs.

By default, after the devices are paired, they’ll automatically see each other and communicate when they’re both powered on and have Bluetooth enabled.
You shouldn’t have to re-pair the accessory and the device when you want to use them together again. You’ll only need to do this if you tell your devices to forget each other — or pair a headset with another device, for example.

How to Burn Disk Images (ISO & IMG) in Windows 7 & Windows 8

Image result for disk image

What Is a Disk Image & Why Is It Useful?

For those of you not familiar with the term, disk images are digital copies of a disc (CD, DVD or Blu-ray), that keep the same structure and contents. These disk image files can have many formats and file extensions, the most common being IMG and ISO.
They are useful when you need to backup media such as installation discs, data discs, etc. By making a disc image, you can easily copy it over to another disc which can be used in case the original gets deteriorated. You can also use third-party software, or Windows 8's File Explorer to mount the image in a virtual drive. This virtually mounted image would then function exactly the same as a physical disc in your drive.

For more information about mounting disc images, check out our article here: Introducing Windows 8: Mount or Unmount ISO Images in File Explorer.
If you want to know which applications can create disk images, read the following tutorials:

What Kind of Image Files Can I Burn?

Currently Windows Disc Image Burner supports only the two most common formats: IMG and ISO disk image files.

Do You Need to Burn Discs with Other Types of Files: Pictures, Video, Music, etc?

If you have arrived to this page while trying to find a way to burn videos, music or data to a disc, this tutorial will not help you. Try these tutorials instead:

How to Burn an Image With Windows Disc Image Burner in Windows 7

First, navigate to the ISO or IMG image file you want to burn, right click on it and select Burn disc image.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
NOTE: If you have third party software installed which has file associations with ISO or IMG files, you will find Windows Disc Image Burner in the Open with menu.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
The Windows Disc Image Burner application will now open. You can choose which disk burner to use, if you have more than one, in the Disc burner drop-down list. To double check that the burning process was successful, you can select the option "Verify disc after burning". Insert a disc in your DVD or CD burner, wait for a few seconds and click on Burn.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
The application will detect the disc type and, if the disc is rewritable and has content on it, it will show a warning message allowing you to choose between deleting the existing content or not. Once the burning process starts, there is no percentage progress meter. There's only a green progress bar.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
After the burning process finishes, the DVD/CD tray will automatically open and you will see a confirmation message if the burning process was successful.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
To exit the application, click Close.

How to Burn an ISO File to a Disc in Windows 8

To burn your ISO file to disc in Windows 8, right-click or long-press the file in File Explorerand click or tap Burn disc image.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
NOTE: If a third-party application is installed that handles ISO or IMG files in your system, you'll need to reassociate File Explorer for this to work. This article explains the procedure in detail.
You can also use the ribbon interface which is new in Windows 8 to burn an image file. Select your disc image file, select the Manage tab on the ribbon and click or tap Burn.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
The Windows Disc Image Burner will then launch and select your default disc burning drive to use for the procedure. If you'd rather select another drive, you can choose it from the Disc burner drop-down list at the top of the window.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
After selecting your drive, choose whether or not to verify your disc after burning. For a simple program or video it isn't really worth the time to verify, but if you're burning something like a Linux operating system that you intend to install to a computer, verifying that there are no errors could prevent some serious problems during the installation.
Then, click or tap Burn and wait for the process to end. After the burning process finishes, the DVD/CD tray will automatically open and you will see a confirmation message if the burning process was successful.
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
To exit the application, click or tap Close .

How to Burn an Image from the Command Line

If you prefer the command line, you can use it to burn an ISO or IMG image file in either Windows 7 or 8. First, open the Command Prompt . To learn how to access it, check this article: 7 Ways to Launch the Command Prompt in Windows 7 & Windows 8.
You can start the burning process using the following command and parameters:isoburn.exe /q [the CD/DVD writing drive] .
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
For example, I had to burn the ubuntu.iso file, found on my F: drive, in the test image folder. The drive of my DVD writer is I:. To burn that iso file, I have to write the following command:isoburn.exe /q I: "F:\test image\ubuntu.iso".
Windows Disc Image Burner, Windows 7, Windows 8
The command is not case sensitive which means that it doesn't matter if the image or folder name has capital letters or not. After you write the command, press Enter and the Windows Disc Image Burner opens, performing the burning process automatically.
Unfortunately, in the Command Prompt, you cannot set Windows Disc Image Burner to verify the disc after the burning process.

How to Make Google Chrome Use Less Battery Life, Memory, and CPU

Image result for chromeImage result for chrome
Chrome isn’t the minimal web browser it once was. Originally named Chrome because it was designed to get out of your way, Chrome is no longer just a minimal browser — it’s an entire application platform.
Google’s browser seems to eat quite a bit of battery life, particularly on Macs. It’s also very memory hungry, which can hurt PCs with low amounts of RAM. Here’s how to minimize the damage.

Don’t Continue Running Background Apps

Chrome normally continues running in the background, even after you close it. If you’re on Windows, you’ll see a little Chrome icon in your system tray — it may be buried behind that arrow icon. Close all your Chrome windows and Chrome itself will still be running in the background.
if you’re trying to free up memory on a PC with a limited amount of RAM, this is a problem. It also means that Chrome will continue having an impact on your system’s battery while it’s running in the background. To really close Chrome, you could right-click the Chrome icon and select Exit Chrome.
However, unless you’ve actually installed “Chrome apps” that run in the background and need them running 24/7, you may want to disable this feature. To do so, just right-click the Chrome system tray icon and uncheck “Let Google Chrome run in the background.” When you close your Chrome browser windows, Chrome itself will shut down.

Remove Browser Extensions

Browser extensions extend your web browser with additional features, modify web pages, and integrate your browser with the other services... [Read Article]
It can’t be said enough — browser extensionswill slow down your browser, make it take up more memory, and drain system resources. On Chrome, you can see some of the impact browser extensions have by clicking the menu icon, pointing to More tools, and selecting Task Manager. Items beginning with “Extension:” are browser extensions Chrome is running.
For example, here we can see the official Google Hangouts extension is using over 100 MB of RAM. Not only that — it’s consistently using 1 to 2 percent of the computer’s CPU, so it’s unnecessarily draining battery power as well. Uninstalling an extension like this one is a good idea, unless you really do need it.
Not every browser extension will appear in this list. Some extensions don’t run as their own processes as well. Instead, they include scripts that run when you load web pages to provide their features. Running additional scripts on every web page you load will take more CPU and thus drain your battery more.
Visit your extensions page by clicking the menu button, selecting More tools, and clicking Extensions. Uninstall extensions to make Chrome more lightweight, paying particular attention to any extensions clearly hogging resources in the task manager.

Eliminate Background Pages

If you check your Chrome Task Manager, you may see something called a “Background Page.” This is different from an extension or app. Here, we see that there’s a “Background Page: Google Drive” process consuming memory and using a bit of CPU resources.
The Google Drive background page is caused by enabling offline access to your documents in Google Drive. This spawns a background page that stays running, even when you have all Google Drive tabs closed. The background process is responsible for syncing your offline cache with Google Drive.
If you don’t actually use the offline documents feature and would rather put Chrome on a diet, you can visit the Google Drive website. go into the Settings screen, and uncheck the Offline option. The background page will vanish, but you won’t have access to your Google Drive documents offline.

Enable Click to Play Plugins

Be sure to enable click-to-play plug-ins in Chrome, too. This will prevent Adobe Flash and other plug-ins from starting up and running in the background. Your battery won’t be killed because heavy Flash advertisements are running in the background — only Flash content you specifically allow will be able to run. The same goes for other plug-ins.
To do this, open Chrome’s Settings page, click “Show advanced settings,” click “Content settings,” and choose “Let me choose when to run plugin content” under Plug-ins.

It can be tempting to have twenty tabs open at once, but don’t run too many tabs at once if you want to save memory — close some tabs to prevent them from using a lot of memory.
When on battery power, try to regularly trim down the number of open tabs so you don’t have a bunch of web pages running in the background. As you can see in the Task Manager, web pages running in the background could potentially be using CPU resources and draining your battery, depending on what they’re doing.
You could always bookmark them or save them to a read-it-later service like Pocket so you can come back and read those interesting web pages later.

Try a Different Browser

If Chrome isn’t doing it for you, you may want to try running another browser — especially if you have simpler needs and don’t necessarily require Chrome’s browser extensions or powerful features.
For example, the included Safari browser seems much more battery-efficient on Macs. Mozilla’s Firefox uses less memory on Windows, so that’s helpful if you’re on a PC with a low amount of RAM. Microsoft has also trumpeted statistics that show their own Internet Explorer browser uses less battery power on Windows than Chrome does, so even IE may be a good option if you want to make your battery last longer.
